So, the use of photo-radar speed enforcement is not allowed in BC. However, as of today, red light cameras have been updated to ticket cars going 20km/h (12mp h) over the posted limit. How is this allowed?

That’s bullshit. I’m not opposed to photo speed enforcement, but trying to weasel around existing laws is not cool (especially since it seems like it pretty much assures they will used for revenue generation rather than improving public safety) .

Is mapped information like this why so many people like CarPlay?

I’m impressed by their exploitation of the literal language of the law.

i mean... 20kph over in a dense urban area is not insignificant- cameras or not.

“Its to cut down on accidents”
Lets see how many accidents I cause when I brake hard on a green light to cut my speed before entering the intersection.

My town (Rockville, MD) has lots of speed and red light cameras. They have handy maps online too.
Speed:
Red light:
Those are just the city cameras, there’s also the Montgomery County cameras all around the surrounding areas just outside the city limits.

“Cameras use software, not radar. So it can’t be photo radar”
...I mean, technically correct? A camera doesn’t send radiation to detect, but like, this is totally against the spirit of the law.
Also, check your municipal code. In my city you don’t actually have to pay the fines they issue since there’s no enforcement method- never goes to insurance, police, bmv, nothing.

I guess, but not too hard to hit. I guess I am mostly salty because there is one next to my house.

If I don’t pay the tickets, I can’t renew my insurance. They have that covered.

In our neck of the woods I thought the red light cameras would only trigger if you were not in front of the line when it goes red. But half of those cameras also turned out to be 11 over speed cameras. They got me a few times on that.
Now I just have a car that I can take down to below 10 over and back to 10 over in a convenient time.

Where I live there are plentiful traffic enforcement cameras. While there are no late fees, you can’t renew your registration without first paying any outstanding camera tickets.

I mean this is the literal definition of photo radar speed enforcement, how can it be in compliance with the law? When is the first suit going to be filed against the state?

Honestly.. I may catch heat for this..
While I acknowledge that “speed kills” or whatever, the majority of collisions these days are from distracted driving.
Speed enforcement is just an easy out. Cops (organizations, not officers) love ticketing fancy cars, making a pithy tweet about it and rolling in those likes.
It is a low hanging fruit to appease pearl clutchers and Helen Lovejoy types.
We should be really cracking down on 1) safety violations on commercial vehicles and 2 ) distracted driving.

But safety! Think of the children!
My anecdotal observations in the lower mainland shows a much greater issue with running red lights than simple speeding.

But photo radar is indeed radar triggered.
The cameras now simply track your distance covered/time elapsed through the intersection with software and ticket appropriately .

Agreed, distracted driving is 100% out of control. The RCMP do ‘crackdown’ weekends and write 250 tickets.. I’m not sure why we aren’t doing that 24/7..
But then when was the last time you saw an RCMP doing speed patrol on the highway? I’ve seen one or two ‘traps’ on the Coq - but you used to see them doing that everywhere.

agreed

That makes sense as an enforcement mechanism, but we have no such mechanism here whatsoever.

The lower mainland also needs progressive penalties. It’d be hilarious to perform an audit of the monies behind these cars.

It has noth ing to do with public safety, it’s all about generating revenue.
When I lived in Portland, Oregon everyone drove the posted speed limit because if you went even five over you’d get a ticket. I got a speeding ticket because my car “sounded fast and therefore I was likely speeding”. Ca n’t make this shit up. Fuck cops.

I was in the Montreal area two weeks ago going 110 on a 100kmh freeway, and I was flashed in the face then I saw the flash from my mirror from a lamp post.
I still didn’t get the ticket, and I hope I don’t Since I was only 10 over the limit.
![]() 07/29/2019 at 15:18 |

Using a photo and plotting distance versus time is going to be less accurate than radar probably. By selecting 20+ over, there is probably no way to argue out of that ticket. Because even if the accuracy is +/- 10 then you are still going at least 10 over anyways.

I’m surprised the flashes don’t cause accidents, especially at night. They always scare the bejesus out of me.

Every police vehicle in my town is equipped with speed detection gear. And the highway patrol cars have automatic registration checking software (when in mobile phone range).
Fixed speed cameras/red light cameras simply target the wilfully stupid. Therefore, they deserve it.
And then there’s the fines ...
